How much Zoom do I need?
November 4th 2007 23:09
For this eagle you no doubt do need a zoom, unless they let you get close up to take your snap, which is very doubtful.
When it comes to zoom go for as large as possible and as large as you can afford!
In routine usage you hardly use a big zoom if any at all.
But for wildlife the larger the better. The squirrel was taken with a 10X zoom and without that capacity it would not have been possible to take a good shot at all.
But if you have little need of and no inclination for such photography don't waste your money or buy what you really cannot afford.
There was no zoom used at all for this one,
Here is the same image used with various zooms.
But notice the higher the zoom, the more of the image you lose, so that is something for you to learn from and experiment with and help you to decide just what you want your camera to do for you.
The boat was take with a 40x combined optical and digital zoom.
I think by now you are beginning to understand what I mean.
So my advice is to get some zoom if you're on a budget or have limited requirements and then there is a sliding scale of what you'll get for what you pay for.
I'll look out for a $500 camera for you and perhaps a cheaper one that will give you as much in the way of zoom as you're likely to need and then we'll look at more expensive cameras but it won't just be the zoom you're paying for there will be other features to consider as well.
Anyone having anything else to offer is most welcome to leave a comment.
