So what's a wide angle lens?
December 11th 2008 01:44
A loose definition of a wide angle lens is,in lay terms, which makes it more easily understood, a lens giving an angle of view greater that 60 degrees, and I just hope most of you know what an angle of 60 degrees is. If you don't just think of the corner of one of these posts, divide it into three equal divisions and the second division will give you the idea of 60 degrees or approximately 2/3 of the view you see with your eye and what you see through the 'eye' (lens) of the camera, and for most of you that will be as you look through the viewpiece and I'm aware that for many that is the rectangular picture you see in your modern cameras rather than the need to look through a small viewfinder ( but guess which produces the best photos ? )
But to continue, with your modern camera of any description you generally see from 60 to 100 degrees and with a very wide angle lens you often can photograph more than your eye can see and this is the basis you'll observe with many 'fish-eye' lenses.
In attempting simplicity it is often the case that accuracy is somewhat compromised and for the lesser informed this explanation will suffice, and for the informed, it will be unnecessary.
Once you start to use that zoom though that wide angle is lost.
That's equivalent to changing the settings.
With a wide angle lens you usually get a sharp image with a deep perspective, or, in other words 'depth of field', so that all the elements seen through the lens will appear in sharp focus.
Once again the quality of the lens and the camera will yield varying results.
They are good for landscapes and for any image where you want to feature the background as well as the foreground, to set the image in its context.
So here is a selection for you of photos taken with a wide angle lens.
See if you can find some amongst the many images I put up for you daily, which, of course, is not going to last forever.
I hope you found this post useful, let me know if you didn't.

Some great shots too. A wide angle is a hard lens to get the hang of but these shots show what can be done once it is mastered.
This posts builds on others. Kudos!
