A general view of crosses inside the abandoned cemetery of Pisagua, a small town in Chile's Atacama desert, that was the most important detention center for political prisoners during the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship, some 2020 km (1,255 miles) north of Santiago, October 20, 2006. Starting from the coup in September 1973 until October 1974, hundreds of political prisoners were brought here to be tortured. The Rettig report, a key human rights report on the abuses of the dictatorship, was important in the locating and exhumation of 19 bodies that showed clear signs of torture in an unmarked common grave in this cemetery in June 1990.
