There are some excellent illustrations of good photography in this collection, and you'll pick up some composition skills by looking at them, photography is not just simply about lining up the picture and using point and shoot. Watch for those perspectives and the angles and lighting, see the natural framing and look for embedding, the rule of thirds can have a very wide interpretation, the more you learn and practice the better you'll become and the easier it gets and you'll find your awareness of people and events and the environment both around and above you and even things going on below or behind you is heightened.
If you don't have time during the week, pick a good weekend and off you go with your good friend, your very own camera.
If you get something good enough you can always submit it to Reuters, and churches make wonderful subjects for photos.
There's something about the Catholics so use the link to take you to join them in their rituals and celebrations.
