How to take good photos - buildings, people.

Placing people into a location enables the viewer to gain a sense of scale of the buildings and surroundings.
People further away from the camera appear smaller, so their presence gives a sense of depth in the picture.
In this picture from Bukhara, Uzbekistan, late-afternoon shadows cast by people in the scene help establish size and scale by changing the camera position.
