Fashion magazines may be in a rut, but many photographers working outside of the fashion world are creating innovative, beautiful work that revolves around clothing. The International Center of Photography in New York City showcased the best in its third triennial of photography and video. Here is one of them.
Miyako IshiuchiMother's #49
2002
Ishiuchi predominantly focuses on social tensions and changes in post-war Japan but began photographing her mother in 2000. When her mother died unexpectedly, Ishiuchi began photographing her belongings, including diaphanous lace slips and old lipstick tubes. The photographs are haunting and ghostlike, as well as exquisite and slightly nostalgic. They speak to the emotional power and resonance of an article of clothing.
