Nenets of the north

October 7th 2009 23:06
Nenets of Russia

The Nenets of Russia's frozen north have survived from the age of the Tsars to the present, but now confront their biggest challenge -- beneath their feet is enough gas to heat the world for five years.

Nenets catch reindeer with a lasso on the Yamal peninsula, north of the polar circle, August 4, 2009. The Nenets tribespeople of Russia's frozen Yamal peninsula have survived the age of the Tsars, the Bolshevik revolution and the chaotic 1990s, but now confront their biggest challenge -- under their fur-bundled feet is enough gas to heat the world for five years.
