Perth, located on the Indian Ocean and close to critical commodities such as iron ore, has emerged in a big way. Australia's richest city has become a major urban threat to long-established Sydney and Melbourne, with growth driven both by domestic, as well as foreign, migration and development. Its tourism industry is also booming. Perth's average nightly rate for a hotel room shot up by 19.5% over the course of 2008, and the city was ranked No. 1 in the 2008 Deloitte Hotel Occupancy Global Ranking Index
