Photographic images - analysis and appreciation

The surfer

That first image is of action and feedom and the power of the waves.

I'm sorry this post is so late, I have been snowed under.

Now, it's just the analysis of the two photos and once again, I've been lucky, I could not have wished for better.

link to CNN photo of the day - the baby

This baby is heavenly, so out of this world. Look at that spiky hair, those big brown eyes, the blue bottle and the white/cream bed linen. Look at her little fingers and her curved fingers and her extended thumb. The expression in those liquid eyes, the love being received and accepted and the bliss and contentment that only a baby can feel. Her furrowed brow and squashed nose and the sterile conditions as a barely noticeable gloved hand feeds her, a human hand.

This baby is not one of the family of man but there is obviously a very close link. How beautiful she is but if she were one of ours, we'd say how ugly. She is the focus of the photograph and occupies an almost triangular position placed to the lower right with almost a diagonal creating the line in the rectangular setting.

She is held with her head carefully cradled in her carers arm almost obscured at the right edge of the photo.

The focus is the baby's head and arm and the bottle and we sense her comfort, tranquillity and composure. The image appeals to our emotions and our instincts and to the respect of one species for another amongst those of the world who do care for the place in life of the other animals.

This is a photo that engages the heart and the photographer is very skilled. He has take a close shot but sufficiently removed to embrace the baby just as she is embraced. This is great photography and one with a purpose.

It is artistically presented. Study the composition it will give you ideas for your own photographs.

The second image is of an even smaller creature but one very precious in the preservation of the environment.

This is brought to us by National Geographic.

Photo of the little green frog by National Geographic

Here is what they have to say.

A white-handed tree frog stares at the camera from its perch on a fern in São Paulo, Brazil. There are more than 730 amphibian species in Brazil, 467 of which are endemic to the region.

(Photo shot on assignment for, but not published in, "The Fragile World of Frogs," May 2001, National Geographic magazine)

Photograph by George Grall

Note how green this photo is and how appropriate the connotations of that colour.

Look at the various knobs on the ferny branches, look at the blending of colours and shapes.

Note how fortunate the photographer is in engaging the full frontal attention of his subject.

Note the line of the feet and the similar lines in the branches, note the browns and yellows and look for those similar colours in the tree, this little creature's home in which it is superbly camouflaged. I wish that I were there with you to demonstrate what I mean, but I am not.

But I know that those of you who are interested will look and marvel just as I do. The small feet are juxtaposed on the branches so this little creature becomes one with its surroundings.

We've been very lucky today, some days the photos are not nearly so interesting but the purpose of photographs varies as do their uses and it is amazing how broad a spectrum the photograph can cover.

I hope you derive as much pleasure and benefit from these as I have.

And I hope you will come back for more.

Hi Katyzzz

Ah you have a new blog! I have been busy trying to study for this blasted Citizenship Test so am slow at doing my usual rounds.

You have provided a great analysis here and that pic of the frog is so realistic, he almost looks like he is about to jump right out of the screen.

Some great advice I look forward to soaking it all up to use with my own photo taking.

Ash, you got it, you really got it. I'm afraid that many out there just didn't.

I shall have to think about doing this again. It hardly seems to be worth the trouble, but it is so valuable, if only people would apply their minds just a little.

But I guess some are still trying to come to grips with the basics, so this may have been too sophisticated for my blogging audience. And yet those last four images were just so ideal.

I may just try to simplify a bit but if these attract a small audience, I'm afraid they'll have to be sacrificed at the altar of my time.

I am so glad some cottoned on and I am especially pleased to hear from you, but it's back to the basics of cameras as opposed to art, it seems.

But if people just want to be a photographer as opposed to a PHOTOGRAPHER they just will continue not to respond. The rest is going really well.
