Close up photography - is your camera up to it?
November 21st 2007 02:55
If you are often frustrated by the close ups you attempt which don't work, it is usually the fault of the limitations of your particular camera, most have a decreased capacity to photograph an image the closer one gets to it.
A close-up lens (or diopter) enables the camera to focus closer than it normally can. This means that the image will appear larger in the frame because you can get closer to it. In other words, close-ups allow you to magnify the image. A diopter is, in fact, a magnifying glass (M. Plonsky)
The problem is also that you need to get so close to the subject, here your skill as well as the dioptres, is a requirement.
You may need a different lens to enable you to photograph so closely, but the ordinary camera does not have this lens changing capacity, in which case you may well do with a camera designed specifically for the purpose of close up photography, so when making your decisions about what you need in a camera you do need to take this into account.
No matter how wonderful and up to date a camera is, it cannot function above its inbuilt capacity. Sorry, about that, if you are feeling disappointed.
The selection today gives you some idea of what close up photography can do for you, but remember that with limited knowledge it does make it so much harder to achieve.
May your close ups get better and better

I am really getting into photography lately, and I'm starting to realise how many different factors come into play when taking a photo. After doing some experimenting myself, I will never take another great photo for granted again!
