Rule of 3rds revisited.
November 24th 2007 03:38
For those who do not know or do not understand this rule there is one photo divided into 9 equal rectangles here to illustrate and you have to use your mind's eye to work through how the photographers have achieved their effects.
The rule of thirds means visually dividing a picture into thirds, both vertically and horizontally.
Place the main subject close to where the lines cross.
The division does not have to be exactly equal thirds.
It is used as a simple guide to help you place the main subject of your photograph off center to add more interest.
And do remember "rules were meant to be broken" so never sacrifice a good photograph because it does not comply with this rule.
Dramatic photography requires a good eye, luck, some hard work, being in the right place at the right time and an understanding of lighting and the placement of your subject.
I've given you a feast today but from now on we'll only be having a picnic, time constraints of course, it takes time to do these things as I'm sure you will appreciate.
But you're now well on your way to engaging in and benefiting from your newly learned skills. Thinking, not being the least of those.
Have a happy, snappy day. Have fun with your camera.
