The Reuters 2 daily dozen photos (LINK)
June 26th 2008 21:46
A soldier looks at a cloud of ash from the Chaiten Volcano from the banks of the Rio Blanco in uninhabited and flooded Chaiten town in southern Chile June 25, 2008. The Chilean military helped Chaiten residents return to the town for the first time on Wednesday, since Chaiten Volcano erupted on May 2 spewing ash, gas and molten rock for the first time in thousands of years, to check the condition of their homes and recover their belongings. Experts have said the volcano could erupt at a less volatile pace for months and even years.

This black and white depiction I found riveting. Generally I like colour and lots of it but this one, in black and white and shades of grey, with its textures, harmony and loneliness regarding a natural phenomenon won me, and I featured it as my opening shot rather than my other preference in the blue of number 2, which may have attracted more attention. I guess I was never born to be a salesperson, sacrificing sale for the benefit of beauty and art.
No 2, I found emotionally disturbing and thought, at first, it was a true image, rather than one of an enactment.
It is still a wonderful photo of much social significance and seemingly in support of a good cause.
Other choices to-day are 7, for the juxtaposition of eye ( and isn't it beautiful ) and ball.
10, for the sheer beauty of the feeling of the young man for the boy and the boy's response, and the red certainly does not go astray. This is a photograph which could be contemplated for hours for its depth of feeling rather than depth of field. Sensational.
12, it's so cute, like a little bird peering out of its nest, good use of rule of thirds.
15, for its uninterrupted repetition.
16. beauty in the priest's robes, feeling for and value of religious belief, the vessel capsized resembling a giant whale, and its divisions, good use of rule of thirds.
23, for its tragedy painted in ash
24, for its simplicity and the needs of a woman to earn a living with her humble occupation and the extraordinary lengths she will go to to make a sale, contrasted with the couple focused only on each other, uncaring for the problems of the rest of the world and more particularly of the slender flower seller beside them.
NOW IT'S YOUR TURN TO HAVE YOUR SAY AND SEE WHAT YOU THINK AND HOW YOU WOULD PHOTOGRAPH THE SAME CIRCUMSTANCES.
The Reuters 2 daily dozen, always some things of photographic excellence there for you to assess and compare with your own photography
To-day I have linked to my depth of field post for those who feel in need of it. Of course, there are a lot of other related posts and I'll bring them up for viewing from time to time so that newcomers will not feel neglected.
Happy shooting
