How do shadows and reflections work in photography.
October 25th 2007 05:18
I must say I found it hard to find GOOD photographic images relying on shadow and reflections and yet I know there are superb ones.
I have take some myself far superior to the majority that I have presented here. When you take your camera out for the specific purpose of capturing some good images, go find some water and depending on the time of day, you'll find some superb ones, all you then have to do is to get some practice then take a good look at what you have produced and with a critical eye you'll see some improvements in your work once you have picked out the ones that went wrong and try to improve.
As for shadows all the time you go out, move about, twist, look above you and below you, behind you and to the side of you, crouch down and climb up and look down and lie down and indeed you need to be something of a contortionist if you are to get the best views.
It's not the singer it's the song may well be an analogy for it's not the camera it's the photographer and once you accept that you'll not go far wrong.
The first thing to remember is that in looking for shadows you don't want yours to pop in unannounced with a good photograph, so do be aware of the shadow that your body casts and watch where it falls. A change in position puts you well on the way to avoiding this.
Some of the images I'm going to give you will show quite easily where the photographer has gone wrong and you'll be able to work out how to fix it and indeed there are some really old shots here.
With the next ones you'll see how the photographer has tried to get a good shot which didn't quite work and the last few you will need to acknowledge the photographers art.
I could make it easy for you by telling you more but you will actually learn more by trying to work it out for yourself.
Continue to buy good photography magazines but if money is a problem get some from your local library.
Enjoy the mini exhibition of things past and present, of who's got it right and where some have gone wrong.

Much easier to get it right with landscapes and humans, than with animals and birds.

It`s all about the chiaroscuro isn`t it> light meeting dark and creating that totally new depth to the picture.
I`m a huge fan of this type of photography - you have to look more for it than your simple point and shoot pictures.

I agree with you all and thankyou and Ash is especially tuned in.
Raoul, I take your point but it really was quite difficult to find any examples at all, so at least these served the purpose. It was lovely to see your "red eye" (paticularly appropriate for photography) pop out at me.
