Don't forget the rule of thirds.
Get rid of clutter, think Graphic Design , remember dark on light, light on dark, watch that juxtaposition (relationships within the photo), shoot an appearance, not just an object.
Don't forget you're composing for a frame, which outlines the shape of the photo.
This can be vertical or horizontal. Try both to see which works best.
Place your subject.
Subject placement - Do you need wide angle or do you need to zoom?
Sometimes we need to break the rules, as you'll see in the next photo, the only way was central, smack in the middle.
A simple rule of thirds.
