Personally I think the first image is the best, but this does give a good sense of imagery when similar colours form the landscape for the photographer and the effects created by looking through and photographing beyond unusual "holes" and the shadows and silhouettes.

This is a very ancient city with an interesting past and something interesting about the present too.

Check this out...
This is way out there but I'm going to throw my hat into the ring- You remember that cover shot on Natioonal Geographic way back of the Afghan girl and then they did a follow up 20 years later that appeared not that long ago??? The first shot looks like it's using a silhouette of that shot and then super-imposing the other picture in that one and using it as a frame.
