Calving Glacier, Matanuska Glacier, Alaska, 2007
July 18th 2008 03:14
It takes ice about 250 years to travel the 24 miles (39 kilometers) from the origin of Alaska's Matanuska Glacier to its terminus, where icebergs like this one calve into the Matanuska River.
(Photo shot on assignment for, but not published in, "The Big Thaw," June 2007, National Geographic magazine)
So what is so special about this photo. It's informative, with its narration, it's captivatingly beautiful, It is extremely well focussed, no doubt the camera has an exceptionally good lens, it's in close, its perspective and angle are appropriate and well chosen.
You can see it sliding into the river.
The black rocks featured at the side, sets it in its location and make good use of the rule of thirds, anything else you need to know?
