Shanghai, China
Just 25 years ago, when you waked down the Bund in Shanghai, there were few cars and no modern towers. The city's prosperity--which flourished in the 19th century due to its port location--stagnated after the Communist takeover in the 1940s. Now China's largest city (with over 20 million residents) not only has the world's largest cargo port, it is the fourth-tallest city in the world, with 21 buildings reaching over 700 feet. And it continues to grow. Shanghai is currently planning what could be the mainland's tallest building, at about 1,900 feet--it will be the focal point of the city's financial district. Housing prices, meanwhile, reached a new high in August.
