VIOLENT DAYS: A masked gunman walked past a poster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Beirut Friday.

Shiite gunmen from the country's opposition seized large areas of the capital's Muslim sector Friday, battling Sunni rivals overnight and in the early morning and surrounding the residence of government-aligned Sunni parliamentarian Saad Hariri.
