Learning from others and studying photographs.

A lttle bird told me
Bluebird of happiness?

Photo Tip of the Week

Get Closer

Check out your lens. See what it can do by stepping in closer and placing something in the foreground. What happens to the background? Is it fuzzy or sharp? [from National Geographic]

The first image from CNN scarcely needs any analysis. I think it is a photograph that anyone can appreciate.

It is almost flat across the water, only the top of the pig's head and face shows, note the snout, the eyes, two by two back holes, the rest is submerged. But , Oh those ears, it's really a very different view of things, isn't it? My only problem is the thought that maybe the pig does not like it, in that case it would be cruel.

Note the simple colours of the water and the pig. This allows the viewer to concentrate on the image itself and not to be distracted by other factors.

See, if you can incorporate some of those ideas into your own photography.

There's something going wrong at National Geographic. So today I'm giving you a photo from the BBC.

This is a social impact study and reminds us that childbirth is still a mortality risk in many countries. Who can deny that women need special assistance when viewing this image and reading the commentary.

The woman's body and face are contorted with the pain of childbirth
and the nurse is looking very worried.

Every man should see this.

So tonight I am keeping it simple but none the less meaningful. I know some enjoy seeing these photographs but anyone who wants to improve his/her photography will do well to seek out the work of established photographers and learn from it. Photography is not just about cameras and settings it is about composition most of all and practising the skills which will make for a good photographer and click, click, click. Without that, as a photographer, you are nothing.

Do take the learning experience seriously and use the mind to improve the images produced.

Let me know how you feel about these.
