From deep emotion to the rules of photography

The grandmother (L) and other relatives mourn during a funeral for a neighborhood patrol member in a dust storm in northern Baghdad September 16, 2008.

REUTERS/Omar Obeidi

I chose this photo because of the depth of its emotion, the grandmother's grief is easy to see and to FEEL, no matter the cause, the religion, no matter which side of the fence such a loss is so devastating and I'd like to think unnecessary, surely war encourages hate rather than peace, but it seems ever present, man's inhumanity to man, and without the evil intent of a relatively small minority of the world it seems war will always cause such loss of life and such deep and identifiable grief.

I could not go beyond choosing this for my opening image, it just would not let me.

4. graphical portrayal of the pursuit of GOLD, emotion ripples through the whole of her body.

5. Loyalty to Royalty and the UK, well emphasised.

7. that touch of red, that rule of thirds and victory and don't forget the symmetry

8. the heads and the balls and the focus is well captured

9. amazing effects and good use of rule of thirds

10. juxtaposition sums this one up

11. who he is, what he STANDS for, and rebel beyond compare - I hope they 'get' him

14. Gold again and rule of thirds and symmetry

15. remember what I said about umbrellas

16. symbolism and atmosphere

18. short depth of field and a curve

19. juxtaposition and symbolism

20. central focus - well done

21. irony - note the hand colour contrast and exceptional use of rule of thirds, juxtaposition too

22. simple, poignant, spectacular

23. cultural diversity, manners and harmony and symmetry and rule of thirds

24. A disastrous story to be told.

AND I DO HOPE YOU DERIVE AS MUCH BENEFIT AS THE EFFORT I HAVE PUT INTO IT AND IT IS ALL FREE!
