So when do you need a tripod?

Tripods minimize camera movement which can cause an image to blur. This is especially true when using a slow shutter speed in low-light conditions and is more apparent when photos are enlarged.
Telephoto lenses enlarge an image before it is taken and this can cause particular problems with blur.
The tripod supports the camera, lessening these effects.
The more expensive tripods are made of superior material, generally light to allow easy carriage and also provide quick release mechanisms. This is vital to professional photographers who like their work to be made as quick and easy as possible.
Tripods have variable heights with the highest allowing you to use the camera in a comfortable standing position.
There is a mid position and a collapsed one.
Some tripods allow tilting to allow photography of objects close to the ground.
There are quite a few variables for really good photographers but let's just get you started first.
