Lumix Cameras from Panasonic and Choice

Effective image

This first image is not taken by Lumix, I have simply chosen it as an effective and engaging photograph.

Choice, the consumer magazine has conducted reviews of 48 digital cameras with prices from $199 to $2498.

I think that anyone trying to make sense of that all at once would be sorely tested. But, progressively, I am going to tackle a few, but not specifically in the way that Choice has done but I like the fact that it covers from the cheap to the relatively expensive.

I still think one can't go past a film camera rather than digital for the best rsults but then a lot depends on the processing and printing of the film.

Choice ranked the cameras for image quality, useability, versatility, battery life, flash and more.

Because I have not mentioned the brand before today I'm choosing Panasonic.

I am of the opinion that the best manufacturers of cameras are those whose exclusive function is to make cameras and Panasonic does not come into that caterory.

Panasonic cameras appear to come under the brand name Lumix.

Compatibility with Microsoft Vista is mentioned and before making any purhase which will ultimately rely on use of the images in a computer you would be well advised to check its compatability with your own software.

Not by any means a cheap camera with RRP of $879 I have chosen the Lumix DMC-FZ18: 8.1MP 28mm Wide Angle 18x Optical Zoom, for no other reason than to compare it with others which seem to have the top of their range set closer to $500 but these are its specifications and claims.

I have not consulted Choice's review and you may well wish to do so before making any decision.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ18 has been awarded Photo Review Editor's Choice.

The Photo Review Editor's Choice Award is given only to products that represent significant technical advances or offer special features that are of exceptional interest to photographers.

"Of the three 18x optical zoom digicams currently available, the Lumix DMC-FZ18 is the best overall performer. Compact, lightweight and versatile, it provides a full range of user-adjustable controls. The Leica lens is outstanding and provides plenty of focal length flexibility as well as covering wide angles of view and the O.I.S. stabilisation works a treat."

OIS means Optical Imaging System

Unlike other sites there are no images shown on this site of photographs taken with this camera, which is a pity.

However I have chosen some from the web all taken with Lumix, the final with FZ-20 as opposed to 18 so that should be something like what you would expect.

The others make no reference to models chosen, they are just selected at random.
