AOL founder responsible for ill-fated marriage of the Internet provider and Time Warner. Misses this year's Forbes 400 due to hefty investments in floundering industries: luxury resorts, spas, digital media. Williams College grad served food to the masses as Pizza Hut store manager. Catered to the masses on the Internet with America Online, which became the nation's largest online service company. Merged with Time Warner near peak of tech boom, then watched it disintegrate. Resigned as chairman in 2003.
