Buildings: Clouds: How To Take Good Photos

TOM ANG

White, fluffy clouds are one of the best accompaniments to photographs of buildings, as seen in this shot from Manchester.

Wait for the clouds to partially, but not fully, obscure the sun for lighting that is neither too harsh, nor too flat.
Use a polarizing filter suitable for your camera to deepen the blues of the sky at an angle from the sun.
Try a contre-jour ('against the day') shot by pointing at the sun. Wait for a cloud to move until the sun just peeps past the clouds, giving a burst of light. Do not look directly at the sun with unprotected eyes - use the camera's LCD screen.
