Faces of Afghanistan
October 7th 2009 03:10
As NATO involvement in Afghanistan goes into its eighth year and President Obama faces a pivotal decision on sending more troops, a look at the faces of the civilians and combatants involved.
Lal Mohammad, a 40-year-old farmer, speaks to reporters at a hospital in Kabul August 31, 2009. Lal Mohammad was one of millions of Afghans who defied Taliban threats on August 20 and set out to vote in the country's presidential election. He paid for his decision with a savage mutilation: fighters ambushed him while he walked to the polling station and cut off part of his nose and his ears.
